A diode is an electrical component acting as a one-way valve for current. And diode is used in very wide range. 
Zener diodes are designed to be operated in reverse-bias mode, providing a relatively low, stable breakdown, or zener voltage at which they begin to conduct substantial reverse current.
A Zener Diode is a special kind of diode which permits current to flow in the forward direction as normal, but will also allow it to flow in the reverse direction when the voltage is above a certain value - the breakdown voltage known as the Zener voltage.

There are a number of different electronic devices which tend to be called diodes.

Although they're made differently they all have three things in common.

They have two leads like a resistor.
The current they pass depends upon the voltage between the leads.
They do not obey Ohm's law!

As an example we will use a typical diode called a pn-junction. This allows us to explain behaviour of diodes.

The function of a diode is to allow current in one direction and to block current in the opposite direction.

The terminals of a diode are called the anode and cathode. There are two kinds of semiconductor diodes: a P-N junction diode, which forms an electrical barrier at the interface between N- and P-type semiconductor layers, and a Schottky diode, whose barrier is formed between metal and semiconductor regions.

Remember, however, that there are other sorts of diodes which are built differently but show the same general behaviour.

Transistors are three terminal active devices made from different semiconductor materials that can act as either an insulator or a conductor by the application of a small signal voltage.

The transistor's ability to change between these two states enables it to have two basic functions: "switching" (digital electronics) or "amplification" (analogue electronics).

Then bipolar transistors have the ability to operate within three different regions:

  • 1. Active Region - the transistor operates as an amplifier and Ic = β.Ib
  • 2. Saturation - the transistor is "fully-ON" operating as a switch and Ic = I(saturation)
  • 3. Cut-off - the transistor is "fully-OFF" operating as a switch and Ic = 0

The word Transistor is an acronym, and is a combination of the words Transfer Varistor used to describe their mode of operation way back in their early days of development.

There are two basic types of bipolar transistor construction, PNP and NPN, which basically describes the physical arrangement of the P-type and N-type semiconductor materials from which they are made.

Trimming Potentiometers carry specifications for potentiometer category and actuator configuration. Industrial-grade potentiometers are protected by an enclosure, typically one that is rated by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA). Typically, industrial-grade products are gear-driven and have connector outputs. These Trimming Potentiometers resist the ingress of dirt and dust, and last longer than unenclosed potentiometers. Discrete-board components, another potentiometer category, are also commonly available. In terms of actuator configuration, choices include single-turn, multi-turn, and slide. With single-turn devices, the shaft rotation is limited to less than or equal to 360 degrees. By contrast, multi-turn Trimming Potentiometers can be rotated multiple times, with as many as 15 or 20 turns from stop to stop. Slide-actuated products require the user to move a handle instead of rotating a knob.

Telephone / fax / modem protection

Telephones, faxes and modems are equipped with sophisticated but sensitive electronics. Typical circuits used to protect them with surge arresters are shown in following Fig.

These arresters protect against common-mode interference voltages, i.e. surge voltages that appear in both lines to ground. In the event of an over voltage, the arrester protects both exchange lines by conducting the surge current away to ground.

The fundamental electrical properties of multilayer ceramic capacitors are as follows:

Polarity: Multilayer ceramic capacitors are not polar, and may be used with DC voltage applied in either direction.

Rated Voltage: This term refers to the maximum con tinuous DC working voltage permissible across the entire operating temperature range. Multilayer ceramic capacitors are not extremely sensitive to voltage, and brief applications of voltage above rated will not result in immediate failure. However, reliability will be reduced by exposure to sustained voltages above rated.

Like all other practical capacitors, multilayer ceramic capacitors also have resistance and inductance. A simplified schematic for the equivalent circuit is shown in Figure 1. Other significant electrical characteristics resulting from these additional properties are as follows:

Impedance: Since the parallel resistance (Rp) normally very high, the total impedance of the capacitor is :

The variation of a capacitor’s impedance with frequency determines its effectiveness in many applications.

Quartz is used in the making of sandpaper, optics, glass, liquid filters, circuit boards, computer components, cement, mortar, and jewelry. Quartz crystals are also piezoelectric meaning when an electrical current passes through them they vibrate a small amount. Time can be measured from the vibrations of the quartz crystals so quartz crystals are often used in clocks.

Quartz crystals may either operate in a fundamental mode or in an overtone mode. Below frequencies of around 25 MHz crystals are normally designed to operate in their fundamental mode, whereas above this they will normally be designed for overtone operation, although with manufacturing techniques improving higher frequency crystals are becoming available. The mode is therefore an important element of the crystal specification.
